About the plant
Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is an evergreen shrub with large, glossy dark-green leaves and fragrant white flower spikes in spring. It is one of the most popular choices for a dense green hedge.

Care
Plant in moderately moist, well-drained soil. For a hedge, plant about 2–3 plants per metre. Prune after flowering to thicken the shrub. Note: the leaves and seeds are not edible.
Planting and care
1. Planting. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and just as deep. Set the tree so the graft union stays above soil level, backfill, firm gently and water well. Mulch to keep the moisture in.
2. Watering. In the first year water deeply once or twice a week, depending on rainfall. In hot summer months water early in the morning or in the evening. Avoid standing water around the roots.
3. Feeding. Feed once a year in early spring, before the leaves open, with a balanced fertiliser for fruit and ornamental trees. No extra feeding is needed in the first year after planting.
4. Pruning. Formative pruning is done in late winter or early spring, before the sap rises. Remove dry, damaged and crossing branches so the crown stays open and airy.
5. Winter protection. During the first two winters, protect young trees with a thick layer of mulch around the base. Guard young trunks against rodents with mesh or a protective wrap.
